Southern High School Marketing students spent some time teaching the elderly at the Guma Trankilidat Senior Care Home various ways to use technology to assist them in their everyday lives. Students shared their knowledge of the Microsoft programs. Students demonstrated how to use the Excel program in creating a general ledger for tracking their income. Microsoft Word was used for writing letters. Students demonstrated PowerPoint by taking the opportunity to document their experience and sharing their experience with the elderly. Students also shared Internet tips. The elderly exchanged their wisdom by sharing their stories, song and dance. Although the intent was to teach technology to the elders, students expressed greater appreciation of learning from the elderly. The Guam Community College's Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) encourages service-learning and civic engagement projects in the community. CCE develops authentic partnerships between and among GCC's faculty members and students, community-based organizations and other service agencies. Our mission is to enhance student educational expreriences through integration of academic study with active service, while encouraging civic involvement, community awareness, and responsible leadership.
