Science education and exploration of the natural environment are central to many service-learning projects. This topic includes resources on energy and climate change. Service-learning provides opportunity for youth and students to address environmental needs in meaningful ways starting in their own homes, schools, and communities. Environmental stewardship is one of six focus areas outlined in the Corporation for National and Community Service 2011-2015 Strategic Plan. Within this focus area, the Corporation's objectives are to:
- Decrease energy and water consumption
- Improve at-risk ecosystems
- Increase behavioral changes that lead directly to the above objectives
- Increase green training opportunities that may lead to the above objectives
