Stories from Middle School Service-Learning VIPs



Service-learning is about taking what you learn in the classroom out into the real world. It can help you make connections between your classroom, school, and community—plus it feels good to help others! Check out how these kids were able to make a difference through service-learning—we think this makes them Very Inspirational People.

  • Students from Marblehead Community Charter Public School teamed up and chose different focus areas for their service projects.
  • Janelle and other students from Frederick Douglass Academy VIII made sleeping bags for the homeless.
  • Students from Mercedes Garcia de Colorado Middle School in Catao, Puerto Rico, created an emergency plan and prepared supplies for seniors who live in an area that's prone to flooding.
  • Sixth graders at the Federico Degetau II Grammer School in the township of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, participated in a year-long afterschool project, including one month in summer.
  • Project ReGeneration is an environmental service and learning program for sixth through ninth graders in Marin and Sonoma counties. It inspires future generations of environmental stewards and leaders.
  • Seventh-graders at Nellie Stone Johnson Community School worked with PeaceJam, Youthrive, Henn Co. Village Social Services, the University of Minnesota, and Kwanzaa Church to promote peace and understanding.
  • Students from Many Junior High School participated in a project called "Puppy Tales," a geriatric pet-therapy training program, a food drive and dog-training seminar for a local Humane Society, and prepared banners for Veterans Day celebrations to be held at the school.
